Potted roses are easy to plant and can be added to your garden at almost any time of year.
When to Plant
- You can plant potted roses year-round, provided the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged.
- Spring and autumn are ideal times for planting.
Choosing the Right Spot
- Roses perform best in full sun and well-drained soil.
- Choose a position that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
- Avoid planting too close to walls or fences where roots may struggle.
- If replacing an old rose, refresh the soil or add Rootgrow to help your new plant thrive.
How to Plant Your Potted Rose
- Remove the rose carefully from its pot, keeping the root ball intact.
- Dig a hole slightly larger than the pot (about 40cm wide and deep).
- Mix organic matter such as compost or manure into the bottom of the hole.
- Place the rose in the hole so that the top of the compost is level with the soil surface.
- Fill in around the root ball with soil, firming down gently.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
Aftercare
- Water regularly, especially during dry spells and the first growing season.
- Feed with a rose fertiliser in early spring and mid-summer.
- Apply mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
With a little care, your potted rose will establish quickly and reward you with beautiful blooms season after season.
