Standard roses are specially cultivated plants that have been grafted and trained to develop a rounded, ‘lollipop’-shaped head atop a straight stem. They make a striking feature in any garden, offering a touch of elegance and structure, whether planted in the ground or displayed in a large container. However, they do require slightly different care compared to bush or shrub roses.
Typically, a standard rose consists of a patio or compact rose variety grafted onto a tall, straight stem, which is itself grafted onto a rootstock. The head forms the distinctive rounded shape at the top of the stem and should be pruned regularly to maintain its symmetry and overall balance. It’s important to note that the stem will not increase in height over time; any vertical growth will come from the head, so consider this when selecting your standard rose.
For best results, plant standard roses in a sheltered position and ensure they are securely staked to protect both the head and the stem from wind damage. Regular deadheading throughout the flowering season will encourage continuous blooming, and any suckers emerging from the base should be removed promptly.
Standard roses should be fed and watered in the same way as other roses. During hot weather, especially if the plant is in a container, take care to keep the roots well-watered to prevent stress and ensure healthy growth.
