Season Rose Care Calendar

Modified on Thu, 6 Nov at 11:15 AM

Keep your roses healthy and blooming beautifully all year round with our easy, season-by-season care guide.

Spring (March – May)

Goal: Encourage new growth and early blooms.

  • Prune roses before new growth begins — remove dead, damaged, or crossing stems.
  • Feed with a balanced rose fertiliser once buds start swelling.
  • Water regularly as temperatures rise.
  • Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Check for early signs of aphids or other pests.

Summer (June – August)

Goal: Keep blooms coming and maintain plant health.

  • Deadhead faded flowers to encourage repeat blooming.
  • Water deeply once or twice a week during dry spells.
  • Feed again after the first flush of flowers.
  • Remove any yellowing or diseased leaves promptly.
  • Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent mildew.

Autumn (September – November)

Goal: Prepare your roses for the colder months.

  • Stop deadheading in early autumn to allow hips to form.
  • Reduce feeding as the plant enters dormancy.
  • Lightly tidy up long or damaged stems.
  • Remove fallen leaves to prevent disease from overwintering.
  • Check supports and ties before winter winds arrive.

Winter (December – February)

Goal: Protect and plan for next year.

  • Apply mulch or compost around the base to protect roots.
  • Shield potted roses in a sheltered spot or wrap them in fleece.
  • Inspect for pest eggs or fungal spores on bare stems.
  • Plan pruning and feeding schedules for early spring.
